Nos primeiros dias de férias de Natal juntei-me à Isabel, uma voluntária portuguesa na Letónia, e fomos conhecer alguns locais que ainda não tínhamos ido. Primeiro fomos a Jūrmala, já lá tinha ido, mas foi bom relembrar o grande areal da praia e rever o mar Báltico de perto.
No segundo dia quisemos visitar o parque nacional do Ķemeri. Como a maioria dos sítios na Letónia, não haviam muitas pessoas, aliás, a pequena vila de Ķemeri parecia deserta ou abandonada. Mas prefiro um passeio por locais menos povoados do que sobrelotados, assim pudemos fazer os trilhos e observar com tempo a natureza do parque. Fomos aos lagos e pântanos e a paisagem é muito impressionante e bonita, com uma fauna muito diferente do habitual da Letónia.
Apesar da chuva, algum frio e longas distâncias sem abrigo, conseguímos passar um dia muito recompensador.
No Natal estive numa casa em Ādaži, perto de Riga, com mais nove voluntários (Portugueses, Alemães e Austríacos). Alugámos uma casa durante três dias e viémos de vários pontos da Letónia para estarmos juntos. Cozinhámos e comemos muito, especialmente pratos típicos de cada país para dar a conhecer aos outros. Com a Isabel fiz leite creme e aletria, que foi um sucesso entre todos! O Telmo, um voluntário português que está em Daugavpils, tinha bacalhau que a mãe lhe enviou de Portugal e cozinhou bacalhau à brás, o que foi óptimo para recordar o típico prato português que já não provava há imenso tempo.
A casa também tinha uma sauna e pudémos usá-la. Foi a minha primeira vez numa sauna, o termómetro chegou aos 90º! Com esta temperatura o meu nariz queimava por dentro ao respirar e não conseguia tocar no cabelo porque queimava. Foi uma sensação diferente e muito relaxante que quero voltar a experimentar na Letónia, mas para a próxima, em vez de sair para o jardim, quero sair para a neve ou para um lago gelado! Também trocámos presentes entre nós e ouvimos canções de Natal. Foi bom estarmos todos juntos nesta época, senti o espírito natalício e as saudades de casa foram mais suportáveis.
At the beginning of the Christmas holidays I joined Isabel, a Portuguese volunteer Latvia, and we went to some places where we haven't been before. First we went to Jūrmala, I was there before, but it was good to remember the great sandy beach and to see the Baltic Sea up close.
On the second day we wanted to visit Ķemeri National Park. Like most places in Latvia, there were not many people, in fact, the small village of Ķemeri seemed deserted or abandoned even. But I prefer a walk at less than crowded places than at over crowded ones; so we could walk the trails and calmly observe the nature of the park. We went to lakes and wetlands and the landscape is very impressive and beautiful, with a very different fauna than most of Latvia.
Despite the rain, some cold and long distances without shelter, we spent a very rewarding day.
At Christmas I was in a house in Ādaži, near Rīga, with nine volunteers (Portuguese, German and Austrian). We rented a house for three days and came from various parts of Latvia to be together. We cooked and ate a lot, especially typical dishes of each country to show to each other. With Isabel I made "leite creme" and "aletria", which was a success with everyone! Telmo, a Portuguese volunteer who is in Daugavpils, had cofdish sent from his mother from Portugal and cooked "bacalhau à brás", which was great to remember the typical Portuguese dish that I haven't tasted for so long.
The house also had a sauna and we were able to use it. It was my first time in a sauna, the thermometer reached 90 degrees! With this temperature my nose burned inside when I breathed and I could not touch my hair because it burned. It was a different and very relaxing feeling that I want to experience again in Latvia, but next time, instead of going out to the garden, I want to go out into the snow or to a frozen lake! We also we exchanged gifts among us and heard christmas songs. It was good being together at this time, I felt the Christmas spirit and the homesickness was more bearable.
