Līgo

Na noite mais curta do ano houve uma celebração tradicional na reserva do castelo de Turraida. Vieram ao castelo muitas pessoas de vilas próximas e de outros sítios mais longe, recebemos amigos voluntários e pessoas novas do couchsurfing. A celebração foi muito bonita e mística e, apesar da chuva permanente, haviam muitas pessoas. As mulheres tinham coroas de flores e os homens de ramos de carvalho, ambos simbolizando o sol. Assistimos aos locais a transportar uma longa trança de ramos de carvalho até um círculo onde no centro estava madeira empilhada, pronta para ser acendida. Depois de alguns cânticos tradicionais a fogueira foi acesa e alguns fogos mais pequenos à volta. Esta fogueira foi mantida até ao nascer do sol, que foi por volta das 3h30. Estávamos na fila para sermos purificados por umas senhoras que abanavam ramos de flores e carvalho à nossa volta quando elas decidiram envolver todos os que esperavam. Fizémos um círculo em volta de uma bacia com água e flores e tínhamos de correr para essa bacia para tirarmos água e lavarmos a cara, cabelo, rabo... foi muito divertido e toda a gente se riu muito.

Depois houve danças tradicionais em que dei a mão a estranhos mas também a amigos e dançamos enquanto o céu começava a ficar azul. Quando o sol estava quase a nascer (apesar das nuvens o quererem esconder) seguimos os anfitriões da cerimónia que carregavam tochas pelo meio da floresta enquanto ouvíamos mais cânticos. Chegamos a um ponto alto e aberto para receber o nascer do dia (às 4h00...). No final, e sem autocarros de volta para Sigulda, conseguimos pedir boleia para 8 pessoas, só na Letónia!

On the shortest night of the year there was a traditional celebration in Turraida Castle's reservation. People came to the castle from nearby villages and further away, we hosted volunteers and new people from couchsurfing. The celebration was very beautiful and mystical, and despite the persistent rain, there were a lot of people. Women had flower crowns and men also but made of oak branches, both symbolizing the sun. We watched the locals carrying a long braid of oak branches to a circle where in the center there was stacked wood, for the bonfire. After a few traditional songs the fire was lit and some smaller fires around also. This fire was maintained until the sunrise, which was around 3:30 am. We were in line to be purified by two ladies who shaked bouquets of flowers and oak around us when they decided to envolve everyone waiting. We made a circle around a bowl with water and flowers and we had to run into this basin to take water and wash our face, hair, bottom... it was fun and everybody laughed a lot.

Then there was traditional dances and I gave my hand to strangers but also friends and danced as the sky was beginning to turn blue. When the sun was about to rise (despite the clouds wanting to hide it)  we followed the hosts of the ceremony carrying torches through the forest as we listened to more songs. We have reached a high and open space to receive the dawn (at 4:00 am ...). In the end, with no buses back to Sigulda, we hitchhiked for 8 people, only in Latvia!

Final do Ano e Graduação

No passado dia 13 foi a festa de final do ano no infantário e a graduação do Henrijs e da Lote. Estreou a peça de teatro que os mais velhos tinham andado a ensaiar durante semanas. Estiveram a assistir os pais, irmãos e amigos. Depois do teatro houve a cerimónia em que o Henrijs e a Lote receberam uma espada, certificado e assinaram um livro de encerramento do seu percurso no infantário. Foi muito emocionante assistir a tudo e receber presentes de final de ano das crianças como flores, bolachas, chá... À tarde fomos a um parque perto de Līgatne onde aprendemos sobre a natureza e continuamos a celebrar. Foi um dia muito bom em que senti que começo a fazer parte do percurso das crianças e do infantário.

Agora estamos no período de verão, em que há menos crianças no infantário e estamos todos juntos na mesma sala, os mais pequenos e os maiores.

On the 13th was the end of the year at the kindergarten party and graduation Henrijs and Lote. Premiered the play that the older kids had been rehearsing for weeks. There were parents, siblings and friends. After the theater there was a ceremony in which Henrijs and Lote received a sword, a certificate, and signed a book of closing of their journey in the kindergarten. It was very exciting to watch everything and receiving end-of-the-year gifts from children such as flowers, cookies, tea... In the afternoon we went to a park near Līgatne where we learned about nature and continue to celebrate. It was a very good day in which I felt that I'm beginning to be a part of the journey of the children and the kindergarten.

Now we are in the summer period, when there are fewer children in kindergarten and we are all together in the same room, the smallest and the largest.

Dia da Criança

Segunda feira foi dia da criança e eu e a Alina preparámos uma surpresa para as crianças. Quisemos proporcionar-lhes uma hora de "recreio" diferente do dia a dia. Havia balões, confetis e uma coroa pintada por nós para cada um. Também tivemos bolas de sabão com receita caseira e pré-feitos, jogo da macaca e giz! Foi muito bom ver todos a divertirem-se e a aproveitar o ser criança.

Monday was Children's Day and me and Alina prepared a surprise for the children. We wanted to provide them an hour of "recess" different of the daily routine. There were balloons, confutes and a crown for each one painted by us. There was also soap bubbles made with a home made recipe and already made, hopscotch and chalk! It was very good to see everyone  having fun and enjoying being a kid.

De volta a Sigulda

Já há algum tempo que não passávamos um fim de semana em Sigulda. Durante três dias celebrou-se o distrito de Sigulda em vários pontos da cidade. Na praça da estação de comboios/autocarros esteve um palco por onde passaram vários grupos musicais e performances. Houve também espaço para a dança e mostra de artigos tradicionais feitos por locais. No Sábado chegou o Sev, um voluntário Ucraniano que está em Valmiera há algum tempo e veio visitar-nos. Ele também participou connosco no desfile da cidade, no qual estavam presentes várias organizações, desde o infantário onde faço voluntariado, loja de bicicletas, supermercados, grupos de dança, desporto... Foi bom ver tanta gente na rua em Sigulda e fazer o percurso a pé até ao castelo. Foi pena no final do percurso começar a chover torrencialmente e estarmos com roupa primaveril, meteorologia da Letónia! No dia seguinte eu e a Alina fomos com o Sev a Krimulda e à gruta de Gutman, estava a chover ou fazia sol, mas a paisagem é tão bonita que nos motiva a sair de casa! Ainda houve oportunidade de andarmos na roda gigante que está finalmente activa. No entanto, depois de andarmos, viemos a saber que não é assim muito segura e que provavelmente irá fechar novamente...

It's been a while since we spent a weekend in Sigulda. For three days there were celebrations of the Sigulda district at various points of the city. In the square of the train/bus station was a stage where several musical groups and performances took place. There was also opportunity for dance and showcases of traditional items made by locals. On Saturday Sev came to visit us, one Ukrainian volunteer who is in Valmiera for some time now. He also participated with us in the city parade, in which various organizations were present, the kindergarten where I volunteer, bike shop, supermarkets, dance groups, sports... It was nice to see so many people on the street in Sigulda and do the parade to the castle. It was not so good when at the end of the parade the rain started pouring hard and we where on our spring clothes, Latvian weather! There was still opportunity to go on the Ferris wheel which is finally active. However, after that, we came to know that is not so very safe and probably will close again...
The next day I and Alina went with Sev to Krimulda and Gutman's cave, or it was raining or the sun was shining, but the scenery is so beautiful that motivates us to leave the flat!
