Daugavpils

Desde Maio que estava prometida uma visita a Daugavpils, a cidade onde o Javier, com quem estive no arrival training, está a fazer voluntariado. Passados oito meses essa visita aconteceu: na noite de sexta-feira apanhámos o comboio para Daugavpils. Foi uma viagem longa, a cidade fica no extremo sudeste da Letónia, perto da fronteira com a Rússia.

É a segunda maior cidade da Letónia, no entanto a língua mais falada na cidade é o Russo. A proximidade com a Rússia é um grande factor para que isto aconteça e, historicamente, Daugavpils foi uma cidade importante no império Russo.

Jantámos numa hamburgueria que, apesar de estar aberta à 3 semanas, ainda tinha a oferta de um hambúrguer através de "like & share" (e tinham apenas 1000 para dar). No dia seguinte fomos ao Museu de Mark Rothko, nome relevante do abstracionismo. Este pintor, apesar de fazer a sua carreira nos Estados Unidos, nasceu em Daugavpils. O Museu é interessante e tem seis obras originais. Nessa noite estivemos com mais voluntários de Daugavpils e fomos a um bar à noite, algo que em Sigulda não pode acontecer!

Daugavpils é uma cidade muito diferente de todas as outras na Letónia e veio confirmar que, apesar de ser um país muito pequeno, cada cidade tem uma personalidade única que vale a pena conhecer.

Since May we promised a visit to Daugavpils, the city where Javier, who was on the arrival training, is doing volunteering. After eight months this visit happened: late on Friday we took the train to Daugavpils. It was a long journey, the city is in the southeastern tip of Latvia, near the border with Russia.

It is the second biggest city of Latvia, however the dominant spoken language in the city is Russian. The proximity to Russia is a big factor for this to happen and, historically, Daugavpils was an important city in the Russian Empire.

We had dinner at an hamburger place, that despite being open for three weeks, still had the offer of a burger just by doing "like & share" (and had only 1000 to give). The next day we went to Mark Rothko Museum, a relevant abstractionist painter. This painter, despite making his career in the United States, was born in Daugavpils. The museum is interesting and has six original works. That night we were met volunteers from Daugavpils and went to a bar at night, something that we can not do in Sigulda!

Daugavpils is a very different city from all others in Latvia and confirmed that, despite being a very small country, each city has a unique personality that is worth knowing.
